Meat and two veg 2

Somehow, when Nat cooks the steak it's "Beef Porterhouse Steak with....". But when I make it, it's just "Meat and two veg". I lack finesse I think.

I did manage to make delicious onions to go with it though: Onions in half rings, cooked with a splash of both Worcestershire sauce and white wine vinegar, and a little salt. Yum!

Nat's steak and mushrooms

Nat made delicious steak tonight with sauteed mushrooms and shallots, fresh/parbaked sour dour and rice as sides. We ate it like an open sandwich, topping the bread with the mushrooms/shallots, then the steak and then mustard. It was really good! Nat sure is good at cooking his steak, I'll tell ya. (With brocolli and carrots also not pictured)

Beef porterhouse steak with creamy mushroom sauce 2

Nat made this tonight so I'm not sure the recipe he used but it was GOOD. I heart creamy mushroom sauce. (Peas and corn included in our dinner too, not pictured)

Steak and chips 2

We actually had KFC for dinner tonight. But it's pretty much impossible to make that look good, and I'm quite embarrassed about it actually (even though it was real tasty). Here's steak that Nat made sometime last week served with roast cherry tomatoes, chips, brocolli and bread.

Delicious!

Steak and chips

Nat cooked himself another perfect steak tonight. And he made those shoestring fries himself, from potatoes. Pretty impressive.

New York Angus Porterhouse Steak

Perfectly cooked steak, sauteed mushroom and shallot on top (my favourite part. DELISH), oven roasted cherry tomatoes and rice. Perrrr-fect!

Barbecued Scotch Fillet

Getting back in to the swing of things I forgot to take a photo today. Nat has told me numerous times that no one wants to look at a food blog that doesn't have pictures so I've decided that from now on I'll only post when I get my photo. So I must remember!

The last picture-less post:
Nat barbecued beef scotch fillets (cooked in garlic and butter) and kumara chips for us, which we ate with rice, peas and corn. Whenever we have steak we give the kids sausages, that's one way that we afford it. They don't seem to mind too much.

Beef Scotch Fillet with Stuffed Mushrooms

Nat cooked steak for us tonight, and I made my delicious stuffed mushrooms. I was a bit generous with the cheese tonight so they weren't as good as last time, "Too cheesy for me" Nat said, but they were still delicious. They were good with the steak, just like I suspected they would be. We also had rice to fill the plate (and tummies).

Lasagne, Stew, Brown rice and Salad

We went to a friends place for dinner tonight, so no photo. They served up a delicious dinner of lasagne (with veges, which I can never pull off tastily. So I normally leave out the veges), stew and rice (brown! I love brown rice) and salad (with TONS of extra veges). It was great!

Meat and two veg

It's better than it sounds. I had beef porterhouse steak tonight with onions, broccoli, salad and rice. It was good! I don't know if it's an abomination or not, something tells me a proper chef wouldn't do it, but I cooked my onions and steak (seasoned with salt and pepper) in olive oil, Worcestershire sauce and balsamic vinegar. Just a splash of each. I liked it. And it paired real nice with the balsamic vinaigrette on my salad.

And if you don't like meat you might want to look away because LOOK AT THIS!

For the first time ever I didn't overcook my steak! I cooked a perfect medium steak. I'll say medium because it wasn't bleeding, but I found it was quite red still. Yay! Go me!

Steak and mushrooms

Nat's dinner and photography

My dinner and photography

I think steak is the #1 meal since I've been posting. I'll have to check that. Tonight we had beef porterhouse steak with mushrooms. Nat's creamy, mine not creamy. Asparagas and salad for me, rice and salad with the carrots separate for Nat. And the kids had their own meals as well because steak for 2 is enough let alone 2 and 3/4.

Capitol

Ate out tonight at Capitol. Delicious. Here's what we ate:

Appetisers:
Fried squid with aioli
-(Nat ordered this. It was really good. But then what isn't good with aioli?)
Bruschetta with tomato and basil
-(This looked great but when not eaten straight away the bread went soggy)
Half dozen Cleveland oysters, served natural with lemon and salt
-(I tried the oysters. I won't let someone waste an oyster on me again for a while. Unless it's Nat's dad trying to make me acquire a taste for them. Which he's implied he might do)
Ricotta gnocchi with sage butter, nutmeg and pancetta
(I ordered this. The sauce was THE BEST. I drained the bowl with my spoon)

Mains:
Crispy confit duck with portobello mushrooms
-(Nat ordered this. I tried it. It was sooooo good. I wish I'd ordered it. But Nat said I couldn't order the same thing as him.)
Risotto of zucchini, pine nuts, basil and Parmesan
-(This was nice and light, it was like eating zucchini with Parmesan sprinkled over top, but in the form of a risotto)
Grilled beef scotch fillet, cauliflower crushed with melted Taleggio
-(I heard this was good. And that it went great with the oysters)
Roast lamb rack, caponata and green olives
(I ordered this. It was nice. The lamb wasn't anything to rave about but caponata is my new favourite thing)

With added sides of crushed roast potatoes with rosemary, and sauteed spinach.

Dessert:
Soft centred chocolate pudding with creme fraiche for all four of us
(Pretty much a fondant, not that I've ever had a fondant. But very nice. So light and just delicious.)

I'm devastated to say that I forgot my camera. What a pain. Sounds good though huh?

Steak with salad

Tonight Nat made me delicious beef porterhouse steak with salad and mushrooms. The mushrooms were cooked with red onion and vinaigrette and were delicious.

Also, update: I tried the parsnip crisps again today. They were awesome. Nat said they weren't his thing but I loved them. New favourite.

Roast chicken

At the in-laws again tonight. With auntie, uncle and cousins with children visiting. Yay. The menu:

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme (two of them)
Roast potatoes and kumara
Rice (slightly curried)
Gravy
Bean Salad (I LOVE)
Green salad
Carrot and celery sticks with cottage cheese and chives
Potato bake
Another green salad
Corned beef (cold cut)

And for dessert:
Date and apple cake
A MASSIVE fruit salad
Vanilla ice cream
Various chocolate and candy "for the kids"

Beef porterhouse steak with creamy mushroom sauce

Beef porterhouse steak with creamy mushroom sauce, chips, roasted tomato and peas and corn. In all my preparation of the steak and mushrooms (my first time cooking this) I didn't prep anything else. So the rest of the meal came together as quickly as possible as soon as I realised. But realistically most of my meals look like this, because those sides are two-year-old friendly (my two-year-old anyway).
I overcooked the steak which was a shame, but the creamy mushroom sauce was great. As you can see I made a lot of it, because I knew I would love it. Also, I was making this for one and so just estimated measurements. If you're doing the same, make sure you're not too heavy handed with the mustard. I would recommend this recipe.
